Leithers in Rally (Really? ...n
o, Rally!):
The Banjul Challenge 2008

Click here for the blog (with photographs)!

Yes, it's true. Two stalwart Leithers have thrown caution (and fashion) to the wind and are taking part in a mad, mad drive from Plymouth to Banjul in the heart of Africa in aid of charity. All done in a motor that cost them less than £100 (view picture below to see why).

"Unofficially spoken of as 'The Ultimate Banger Challenge', yet another motley collection of cars costing less than £100 will be assembled to drive over 3,000 miles from the South coast of Great Britain to the West coast of Africa..."

They're off on the 28th December, leaving from Plymouth and have three weeks to reach Banjul in West Africa. And it's all in aid of charity. Hamish and Martin have choseen Home Start. to be the beneficiaries of their madness - Hurray!

The Challenge:

The Challenge is to simply drive the route from Plymouth to Banjul (on a limited budget) with the principal aim of helping some Charitable causes in Senegal and The Gambia.

After the success of the inaugural event at the start of 2003, interest in The Challenge has grown enormously such that three groups of around 40 cars took part in the second Challenge in 2004 and over 200 Teams participated in PBC05.

The fourth Challenge, PBC08, is now gathering pace, and three groups should leave the UK in December 2007, with a fourth Group leaving in February 2008

The Rules:

  1. Competing cars must cost less than £100.
  2. Maximum budget for the vehicle Rally Preparation: £15
  3. Once the Rally is underway, there will be no form of formal assistance from the organisers in any way - Teams are ON THEIR OWN.
  4. All of vehicles that make the full distance to Banjul must be handed over to the Challenge Control Group to be auctioned under controlled conditions (reported to The Gambian Government) in aid of local Gambian Charities.
  5. All vehicles must be LEFT-HAND DRIVE!!

The above rule is necessary because The Gambia is a left-hand-drive country. RHD vehicles are not really welcome in The Gambia. The enormous popularity of this event has meant that we have had to introduce this ruling in order to ensure that the Challenge continues to receive the warm welcome extended by the Government and People of The Gamabia.
RHD cars may not be permitted entry to The Gambia or may be subject to import duties and disposal charges. THEY KNOW WHO WE ARE NOW!!!
