What Leith lacks in wild, hedonistic, and dare I say, tacky gay clubs and bars, it surely makes up for in its small, but perfectly formed selection of gay ‘friendly’ bars and cafes.

Sofi’s Bar, on Henderson Street is clearly one of Leith friendliest establishments. With it’s good-looking staff, regular art exhibitions and great selection of beverages, (including reduced price champagne on Sundays), it is a regular haunt for many couples in search of a quiet hassle-free drink. It’s Swedish roots, film nights, and monthly knitting night, makes it an open minded and accepting venue. Also, any bar willing to shamelessly broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest is clearly hoping to embrace a gay clientele.

Not far from Sofi’s is The Roseleaf, a relative newcomer to Leith this equally friendly bar has a mixed clientele, friendly staff and provides a chilled environment for all types of folk to drink and chat the night away. The Roseleaf serves cocktails in teapots and cups, good food and a brilliant homemade ginger beer.

For those in search of a more traditional pub, then you’ve come to the right place, Leith is full of them. One of the best is The Shore Bar, which offers a uniquely cosy atmosphere, fuelled with live music and an open fire; this bar is warm friendly place, frequented by all kinds of people. The Port of Leith is another excellent bar.

There is also Cruz (not Cruise), the boat on the Water of Leith. It is a mixed and sometimes very gay venue. This floating establishment host regular club nights, attracting many from Edinburgh’s Pink Triangle to venture down The Walk.

Leith is a very friendly place, and most of the bars are accepting of all kinds of people, but like places the world over, some folk don’t take kindly to wild gay debauchery. If it’s a chilled and sophisticated time you want, then Leith is the place for you. Where ever you choose to spend your pink pound, be careful, be happy and be proud.
