Barrie writes: my grandad (John Grant Payne) left my grandmother and her children in 1949 when he was based in Liverpool after the war. From his army records my grandad was based at a coastal battery in Edinburgh between 1950 - 1955. After I found my grandad had emigrated to the US in about 1955 I chased down his foster daughter in the US and she told my mother last year he had a child out of wedlock when he must have been based in Edinburgh between 1950 - 1955. My grandad came back over to Scotland to see his daughter in 1962 with with his foster daughter from the US. The foster daughter from the US told my mother her name was Hilary and was about the same age as she was (born 1951). She said Hilary's mother was called Ella so it could officially be a variation of that name (Helen, Elaine Elizabeth...).
John Grant Payne my grandad was believed to be living at 6 or 8 Springfield street, Leith, Edinburgh between 1952-1955. I had back the voters roll's for that street from Edinburgh but his name is not mentioned, nor is a Hilary or Ella.
I do believe Hilary was born in Edinburgh between 1951 and 1955.
Does anyone know a Hilary or the person in this photo that I captured of cinefilm that I recieved from my grandad's foster daughter in the US? Hilary is in the bottom right of the picture dressed in red, does anybody recognise this girl, it would mean so much to my mother and uncle? If you can help, please email Barrie on

Robbiej is looking for a long lost relative called John Robertson - Robbiej writes: I am looking for John Robertson born c 1799 -1801 and said to be married to a Margaret More or perhaps Moore.
They had a son Edward b/1821 and have a Census with him included in it dated 1841 where Edward is living in Salamander Street aged 20 yrs with three others not of his family. No parents there. I haven't any Census prior to this which might bring in Edward's Father. Edward married Elizabeth Glen. He died in 1900 in South Leith according to
his Death Certificate:

The information was given by his Grand daughter, Maggie Hendrie, who could have made a mistake with her Grand Mother's maiden name.
As there does not seem to be any lead of the marriage/death of Margaret etc. I realise that prior to 1855 records are poor, but maybe there is someone with a connection out there. I have all the information up to this Edward and Elisabeth, but cannot get further back.

Anne Coombs writes: I was left this pendant seal by an aunt of mine who lived in Dumfries.
There was a letter with it - which unfortunately was not dated. The letter is as follows:
About one hundred and fifty years ago it belonged to Captain Hay of British East India Company , by whom it would be worn as a fob. It
passed eventually to his descendent Mr. James Hay who founded the Edinburgh Roperie Co. Leith. He left it among other things to his very
trusted employee Mr. Thomas Craig father of Mrs. Ironside. It afterwards became hers and she gave it to me over twenty years ago, and
I made use of it and now hand it over to James Robertson Faulds Gavin. (It should have a gold split ring).
signed
